Rethinking Mission-Critical Computing
A Deep Dive into VNX+ (VITA 90) Modular Systems for Aerospace and Defense
Monday | September 01, 2025

In today’s defense and aerospace landscape, mission success depends on rapid and reliable computing at the tactical edge. From surveillance aircraft to mobile command centers, the pressure to process and act on data in real time has never been higher. The VNX+ (VITA 90) architecture, exemplified by Trident Infosol’s Raptor-X5 system, implements a Modular Open System Approach (MOSA) inspired, SWaP-optimized, Commercial Off the Shelf (COTS) hardware solution for rugged mission-critical edge-node computers and/or sensor processors.
Addressing the Mission-Critical Computing Challenge
Legacy embedded systems often struggle with the demands of today’s operational reality; constantly driving down the Size, Weight, Power, and Cost (SWaP-C) of a platform, while requiring delivery ofreliable high-performance computing in extreme environments. Modern integrated subsystems must provide modularity, fault tolerance, and environmental resilience without compromising the data processing capability or sensor performance.
The VNX+ Advantage
The VNX+ ecosystem is a biproduct of the VITA 90.x family of standards and is designed specifically for military-grade, MOSA aligned, embedded computing and/or sensor processing applications. This tightly defined ecosystem enables CPU, GPU/GPGPU, I/O, switched-network, communications, and power supply Plug-In Modules (PIM) to coexist on a standardized backplane, in a compact standards-compliant rugged enclosure.
The VITA 90 “family of standards” have been selected as the baseline for the Sensor Open Systems Architecture (SOSA) Consortium Small Form Factor (SFF) reference standard. These standards define PIMs in various sizes, including 13mm, 19mm,. 27mm, and 39mm widths, with the 19mm module being the most common. The use of the standard makes it possible to meet the challenging SWaP-C constraints imposed upon small airframes, surveillance pods, mobile units, and remote sensor-processing locations..

Where It Fits: Modular Systems for Harsh Defense Environments
The Raptor-X5’s compact size (178mm x 122mm x 174mm) and light weight (3.3kg ±0.1 kg) allow it to fit into a range of aerospace and defense platforms. Its rugged construction, high processing throughput, and robust onboard power system enable reliable performance in isolated compartments or mobile scenarios.
This VNX+ system is engineered for high-performance computing applications, offering compatibility with both Intel and NVIDIA processing architectures, in different PIMs designed with a common slot profile. This dual capability enables seamless integration of traditional real-time computing tasks on Intel processors, while harnessing the parallel processing power of NVIDIA GPUs for demanding AI and machine learning workloads.
Designed with mission-critical applications in mind, the system supports the implementation of Real-Time Operating Systems (RTOS), the use of common software Application Program Interface (API), and engineering a system meeting the essential tenents of the Integrated Modular Avionic (IMA) architecture. These implementation capabilities allow the system to meet stringent certification requirements, making it an ideal choice for commercial and military aerospace, defence, and other mission-critical domains.
Future-Ready with Edge AI Capabilities
The inclusion of Jetson Orin NX as a configuration option opens the door to real-time AI/ML at the edge. This enables next-generation mission computing for pattern recognition, anomaly detection, or sensor data fusion in defense environments, providing advanced digital situational awareness at the edge. The Orin-NX can run any number of available applications for the detection of threats and interesting signal intercepts which are of interest at the sensor edge. Being as SFF “Super-Computer” the size of a stack of credit cards, the NVIDIA ORIN™ NX delivers 100 TOPS for superior edge processing and inference in a single 19mm VNX+ module.
Potential edge AI workloads based on Orin NX capability include threat classification, navigation aid, and predictive health monitoring. While the core Raptor-X5 provides the robust foundation, its flexible architecture allows seamless integration of these advanced AI/ML capabilities, empowering integrators to deploy custom solutions for evolving threats and future data-intensive operation.
